Ghost of April’s EP, “Rebirth” is a nice first release from a young band with their own take on the metal scene. Over five tracks, these guys offer a clear view of popular issues, reminding me a little of Rise Against in concepts and themes. A song like “Redemption” can carry a lot of meaning these days.
What really stands out to me is the rhythm guitar work, which reminds me strongly of Stained from the era of songs like “It’s Been A While” or maybe Metallica. Songs like “Feel” really bring this to mind. Making the bass line a thicker, stronger sound would add weight to the feel of the EP, with a solo or two. Otherwise, everything seems well-written, and more importantly, thoughtful.
I have to mention a Deep Purple cover on Youtube, called “Soldier of Fortune” that I thought was really well-done. It’s not on the EP but worth a listen, as are the other three tracks. Ghost of April has a great foundation, with the potential to go pretty far.
